The Home
The Tidy-Enough House Is the Real Flex
by Diane Whitaker
Nobody lives in the magazine house. What the elegant home actually has is edges — a hall table cleared, a bed made, one warm lamp in a room that is otherwise humanly lived-in. Ninety percent chaos, ten percent calm, arranged so the calm is what you see first.
Fewer things, better lit. Grocery-store flowers in a jug you already own. Make one surface beautiful and let the rest be a family's. That is not a compromise; it is the whole art of a home that looks posh and still lets everyone put their feet up.
